Sahar Khalil grew up translating for her immigrant family and other members of her community. Her upbringing as a Middle Eastern woman included the expectation that she would not work outside of the home, which never sat well with her. Her joy of reading and her abilities as a translator led her to the law as a way to become self-sufficient and break outside that traditional mold while continuing to serve her community.

A judicial externship in Riverside County’s Juvenile Court showed her that while reactive responses to crime are inherent within the justice system, resources might be devoted to a more proactive approach that could prevent crime and reduce recidivism. Sahar intends to pursue a career as a prosecutor in order to support historically underrepresented communities and to continue the fight for civil rights and social justice.
